As believers, we have the privilege of being under the leadership and guidance of a spiritual shepherd. This shepherd is called to nurture, protect, and guide the flock entrusted to their care. In Psalm 23, we see the immense value of having the Lord as our Shepherd, and this principle extends to the local church as well. Being planted and rooted under the leadership of a God-appointed shepherd is crucial for our spiritual growth and well-being.

The Benefits of Having One Shepherd

When we are under the care of a single shepherd, we experience numerous blessings. The Psalmist declares, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want” (Psalm 23:1). Under the shepherd’s guidance, our needs are met, and we lack nothing. The shepherd leads us to “lie down in green pastures” and guides us “beside still waters,” providing rest, nourishment, and peace for our souls (Psalm 23:2).

Furthermore, the shepherd “restores my soul” and “leads me in the paths of righteousness” (Psalm 23:3). Through the shepherd’s teachings and correction, our souls are revived, and we are guided in the way of righteousness. Even in the face of adversity, “I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me” (Psalm 23:4). The shepherd’s authority and care provide us with the assurance and comfort we need to navigate the challenges of life.

The Importance of Being Planted in a Local Church

In the New Testament, we see the early church model of believers being firmly rooted in a local assembly. The book of Acts describes the characteristics of a healthy, thriving church: they “continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers” (Acts 2:42). This commitment to the local church and its leadership was crucial for their spiritual growth and the spread of the gospel.

The early believers were not “church hoppers” but were dedicated to the community they were a part of. They recognized the importance of submitting to the authority of the apostles and the local elders who were appointed to shepherd the flock. This sense of loyalty and commitment fostered a deep connection, allowing the believers to be effectively discipled and equipped for the work of the ministry.

Recognizing the Voice of the Shepherd

One of the key benefits of being under a shepherd’s care is the ability to recognize their voice. Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27). Similarly, in the local church, as we sit under the teaching and leadership of our shepherd, we become attuned to their voice. We learn to discern when they are affirming, correcting, or guiding us, just as a child can recognize the tone and nuances of their parent’s voice.

This intimate knowledge of the shepherd’s voice is a safeguard against deception and confusion. When we are firmly rooted in a local church, we are less susceptible to the influence of false teachers or divisive voices that seek to lead us astray. Instead, we are able to discern truth from error and remain steadfast in our faith.

The Dangers of Spiritual Drifting

Unfortunately, many believers today have become spiritual drifters, moving from one church to another without a deep commitment to a local body. This lack of stability and accountability can have detrimental consequences. Without the covering and guidance of a shepherd, we become vulnerable to the attacks of the enemy and the allure of false doctrines.

The book of Hebrews warns us not to “forsake the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching” (Hebrews 10:25). When we neglect the fellowship and accountability of the local church, we risk becoming isolated, stagnant, and susceptible to spiritual deception.

Embracing the Shepherd’s Leadership

As we consider the importance of being planted under a single shepherd, it is crucial that we embrace their leadership and submit to their guidance. This does not mean blind obedience, but a willingness to receive their teaching, correction, and pastoral care with an open and humble heart.

The Apostle Paul modeled this example of submission to spiritual authority, even when he was more knowledgeable and experienced than his leaders. He sat under the teaching of the elders in Antioch, recognizing the value of being accountable and connected to the local body (Acts 13:1-3).

By embracing the shepherd’s leadership, we position ourselves for spiritual growth, protection, and fruitfulness. We become firmly rooted in the truth, equipped to navigate the challenges of life, and empowered to fulfill our God-given purpose.

Conclusion

The Lord, as the Great Shepherd, has graciously provided us with undershepherds to guide and nurture us in the local church. By being planted and rooted under the care of a single shepherd, we experience the abundant blessings of rest, restoration, and righteousness. Let us commit ourselves to the local church, submitting to the authority and guidance of our shepherd, that we may grow in maturity, bear much fruit, and advance the kingdom of God.
