What does Grace sound “Too Good to Be True”? (The Gospel Defined)

In the religious world, the Gospel is often presented as a set of rules, a list of “thou shalt nots,” or a complicated contract where God’s favor is contingent upon your perfect performance. This version of the Gospel is heavy, burdensome, and frankly, not very “good.” However, the Greek word for Gospel is euangelion, which literally means “nearly-too-good-to-be-true news.”

If the message you are hearing doesn’t sound too good to be true, you haven’t heard the Gospel of Grace yet. To reign in life, you must move beyond the “merit” system of the world and embrace the “scandalous” goodness of the Finished Work.

The Scandal of Substitution

The core of the Gospel is not about what you can do for God, but about what God has already done for you. It is a story of a Great Exchange.

  • He Took the Curse: On the Cross, Jesus became the focal point of every curse of the Law, including poverty, sickness, and spiritual death.
  • You Received the Blessing: In exchange, you received His standing, His righteousness, and His inheritance. You didn’t earn it; you simply “inherited” it through His death.
  • No Strings Attached: If there were conditions attached to this gift, it wouldn’t be Grace; it would be a wage.

Beyond Human Logic

Human logic says that you get what you deserve. The Law says that you get what you earn. But the Gospel says you get what Jesus deserves. This is what makes it “too good to be true.”

  • The End of Toiling: You no longer have to struggle to reach a God who is already in you. You don’t have to work for a victory that has already been won.
  • The Gift of Righteousness: You are not a “sinner saved by grace”; you are a new creation who has been made the righteousness of God. This identity is a permanent legal fact that your mistakes cannot change.

The Power of “Nearly Too Good”

When you finally believe the Gospel is this good, it changes the way you live. It removes the “slave mindset” and activates the “ruler anointing.”

  • Boldness at the Throne: Because the news is so good, you don’t approach God with your hat in your hand like a beggar. You approach the throne of grace boldly as a son.
  • Dominion over Lack: The Gospel includes your prosperity. If He became poor so that you might be rich, then lack has no legal right to stay in your life.
  • Restful Increase: You find that when you stop trying to “be good” for God, His Spirit naturally produces holiness and fruit through you.

Conclusion

The Gospel is the only message on earth that is actually better than you can imagine. It is the news that the war is over, the debt is paid, and you are the highly favored child of the King. If you are still trying to “balance” Grace with Law, you are diluting the power of the message. Embrace the “too good to be true” nature of Christ’s Finished Work. When you realize how good the news really is, you will finally have the confidence to reign in every area of your life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Isn’t it dangerous to tell people it’s this good?

Religion thinks so because it wants to control people through fear. But the Bible says it is the “goodness of God” that leads to repentance. When you realize how good He is, you don’t want to sin; you want to follow Him.

How can it be a gift if I have to believe?

Believing is not a “work”; it is a response. It is simply saying “Yes” to what is already true. You don’t “create” the gift by believing; you just “receive” what was already there.

What if I don’t feel “highly favored”?

The Gospel is not based on your feelings; it is based on the Blood. You must train your mind to agree with the Word over your emotions. Say, “I am the highly favored of the Lord,” until your heart catches up with the truth.

Why is this called “The Gospel of Grace”?

Because Grace is the unearned, unmerited favor of God. It is the operative power of the New Covenant. Without Grace, there is no Gospel; there is only religious toil.
